Monday, March 21, 2022: A strong early spring storm will track across the US winter wheat belt the next few days with heavy rains and strong thunderstorms. Rainfall accumulations are favored to be around 0.2″-0.5″ over western Kansas but heftier amounts over eastern Colorado and eastern Kansas that could accumulate to 1.5-2.0″. This will improve drought conditions that have plagued the winter wheat belt going back to last summer. US wheat prices are sharply higher today in a close to limit up move and back over $11.40/bushel, primarily due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine continuing and with analysts’ cutting the amount of Ukrainian wheat forecast to be harvested due to the war. But with heavy much needed rains over the US winter wheat belt, this will improve prospects for the US crop as the official start of Spring begins.
